How to calculate position size in Forex

Why position size is crucial

Forex trading is not just about direction (buy or sell). It is above all a question of risk management. The size of your position directly determines how much you stand to lose if the market turns against you. Too large a lot can empty your account in a single trade. A prize that is too small limits your winnings. The golden mean exists, and it can be calculated.

The golden rule of trading: never risk more than 1 to 2% of your capital per trade. On a $10,000 account, this means a maximum risk of $100-200 per position. This is where batch calculation comes into play.

The three variables of the calculation

To calculate your position size, you need three pieces of data:

  • The size of your account (available capital)
  • The percentage of risk you accept (usually 1-2%)
  • The distance in pips between your entry and your stop-loss (SL)

But there's a fourth variable that's often forgotten: your account currency. An account in EUR will not calculate the same lots as an account in USD for the same trade on USDJPY. Currency conversion is essential.

Simulator: calculate your batches live

Use our simulator below to visualize how your lot evolves depending on your capital, your risk and the distance from SL.

The role of account currency

Imagine a trade on USDJPY with a SL of 50 pips. If your account is in USD, the calculation is direct. But if your account is in EUR, you must first convert the risk into USD (via the rate EUR/USD), then calculate the lot. Signal Sizer does this conversion automatically with real-time rates.

Concrete example

Account: €5,000 | Risk: 1% (€50) | Pair: EURUSD | SL: 25 pips. The calculated lot is 0.20. If the SL is hit, you lose €50. If the TP1 is reached at +25 pips, you win €50. This is how you survive in the long run.

Why Beginner Traders Fail

Most beginner traders use fixed lots (0.10, 0.50, 1.00) without considering their capital. Result: a single losing trade can wipe out 10%, 20%, or even 50% of the account. Calculating position size is your shield.

With Signal Sizer, simply paste your signal, set your risk, and the app instantly calculates the optimal lot for each take-profit level.
